Editor's Log 003
A week in the life
Hi all,
Welcome back to the Editor’s Log, your weekly recap of everything worth knowing (and a few things that aren’t).
Monday
A quiet start to the week, but in the evening I headed to my good friend, and maybe my favourite photographer, Patrick’s takeover of Emily Stanisavljević’s brilliant art club at Camden’s Open Air Gallery. It was lovely seeing him speak so passionately about his work. The guy lives and breathes photography. I didn’t stay for the painting segment though, I can’t draw to save my life.
Tuesday
Babydoom got interviewed by Madjestic Kasual - not my favourite editorial style, but I liked what he had to say.
Elsewhere: Matthieu Blazy debuted for Chanel in what might be one of the best reinventions of a fashion house in recent memory. He remixed the codes - the little black dress, tweed, the double Cs (hold tight Chy Cartier) - into something distinctly modern. And that set design? An entire suspended solar system. Out of this world, literally. I wish I’d been there.
Kiko Kostadinov’s Laura Fanning also showed her latest collection - cool as always, but at this point, it’s starting to feel like déjà vu.
Tim Reaper announced his Future Retro label is going on indefinite pause. Mixed feelings. I love what the label put out, but his best release, ‘In Full Effect’ with Kloke on Hyperdub, shows what happens when he focuses purely on music. So maybe this is a good thing.
Wednesday
Burberry started releasing a series of short films starring Olivia Colman, introducing Americans to “the British way of life” - saveloys, cheese and pickle sandwiches, dandelion and burdock, the lot. They’re gorgeously shot and genuinely funny, some of the best short fashion films I’ve seen in years. My only gripes - they’re too short, and I’m not sure how they’ll sell clothes. But maybe it’s not about that.
In the evening, my good friend Kobi Prempeh (loveliest voice, unmatched aura) sat down with artist Lakwena Maciver for a talk at the Regent Street Apple Store. Two proper Brits, both in Air Maxes. If you’re not familiar with Kobi’s work, get familiar - you won’t regret it.
Thursday
The BFC Foundation announced its 2025/26 scholars with a super fun campaign featuring two favourites of mine: Madeleine Miller and She Carmona. Big things coming from both.
Also: pubs could be open later. Fantastic news for everyone from sixth formers to bald white men everywhere (lol).
Ireland’s rolling out a basic income scheme for musicians, which is huge. If it works, I hope we see similar schemes here, though I do wonder who counts as a “musician.”
In the evening, I went to a talk by Lawrence Lek and Kode9 on their collaborative work. Lawrence’s design practice is genuinely interesting, but his ideas felt a bit half-formed and he basically hogged the mic. Kode9, on the other hand, played the quiet elder statesman - few words, sharp thoughts.
And finally, Tim Westwood has been charged with 15 crimes, including four counts of rape. Good. He can rot.
Friday
Dave dropped a teaser for his album - and every Brit under 30 lost their mind.
NTS announced their Don’t Assume Day lineup, with everyone from Kesh to Jeremy Corbyn (shot by Patrick, by the way).
Ellen Poppy Hill released three new films from her sophomore show - the best show I’ve ever been to, full stop. It’s my lock screen, I think about it daily, and yes, I cried for hours after. She also announced a joint exhibition in Paris with her partner, Leo - both insanely talented. Opens 20 October, go if you can.
Saturday
Quiet one. Started The Black Atlantic by Paul Gilroy - still forming thoughts.
Came home to a lovely PR package from Malin + Goetz (dark rum candle, eau de parfum, and a best-sellers kit). Their grapefruit cleanser and body moisturiser are already favourites, but I think I still prefer their cannabis scent to the dark rum.
Sunday
Giggs performed live at the NFL in London and brought out Jme, sending Americans into collective confusion online (“who tf is Giggs?”). Also, Chip released the first episode of his new talk show… why? Couldn’t tell you. Won’t be watching.
Here’s to another week of British excellence.
Best,
Sik
