Editor's Log 004
A slow week, but never dull.
Hi all,
Sorry I’m a day late - hectic week and broken laptop charger… Welcome back to the Editor’s Log, your weekly recap of everything worth knowing (and a few things that aren’t). A bit of a boring one this week, but just wait for next Monday… it’s already shaping up to be insane.
Monday
A calm start: Yaku teased the most insane (and maybe only) backpack-glove hybrid I’ve ever seen. Low-key a need. Imagine rolling up to school in that - pure aura.
Tuesday
Cora Corré, granddaughter of Vivienne Westwood and co-founder of the Vivienne Foundation, called out the brand for deciding to show in Riyadh, despite Saudi Arabia’s atrocious human rights record. She’s completely right - it goes against everything Vivienne stood for.
KNWLS and Nike finally dropped their collaboration, and honestly, it hits. I really like it and it feels authentic to both brands. The campaign shoot is gorgeous too.
Also, big happy birthday to my friend Dripset, an incredible producer and co-chair of BeauBeau’s music club.
Wednesday
Solange (she’s not British, but still iconic) became USC’s first ever scholar-in-residence, fresh off the opening of her Saint Heron Community Library to the American public. I’m so jealous, to say the least.
I went to the Prince Charles Cinema to watch Phantom Thread for my friend’s 18th - terrific film, though slightly deranged. Hoping no designers I know end up in a similar situation lol.
In the evening, I stopped by the Yaku studio to catch up with Yaku and Nas and meet the new team. Very cool bunch, with very exciting things in the works!!!
Thursday
Instagram announced the winners of their Grace Wales Bonner-designed “rings,” including Gabriel Moses, Olivia Dean, and DJ AG. I think it’s a cool idea, but should go to people using the platform in truly creative ways, like AG, rather than the already-honoured few. Still, good to see them getting their flowers.
Ellen Poppy Hill opened her second installation at Dover Street Market, this time for Frieze! Super upset that I didn’t get to see it, but heard nothing but glowing reviews.
Meanwhile, Olaolu Slawn announced his new (joint) TV show with Spooky Woods for Cartoon Network. Incredibly cool, and a proper nostalgic full-circle moment for those of us who grew up on CN.
Friday
Massive congratulations to friend of the magazine Jayahadadream, who won two Youth Music Awards (!!). If you haven’t already got tickets for her tour, get on it - she’s genuinely one of the best artists in the UK right now.
Giggs’ eternal anthem, ‘Talkin The Hardest’ was finally certified platinum - though, let’s be honest, it’s been diamond in the streets for years.
In the evening, I headed to Tottenham, almost got framed by a policeman (dick) for allegedly bumping the tube (I didn’t), and caught up with Kazna Asker and Charlie Constantinou, plus met his intern. Two designers with insane futures ahead.
Also finally got my hands on a Charlie Constantinou keychain - small wins.
Saturday
Absolutely nothing. I did, however, listen to Björk’s Venus as a Boy for the first time. Stunning.
Sunday
Caught up on the past two weeks of Question Time. Zack Polanski made an excellent debut - articulate, quick, sharp - though he and Zia Yusuf (the devil) descended into playground bickering at points. Ash Sarkar, as ever, was brilliant.
Here’s to another week of British excellence.
Best,
Sik
P.S. Back to longform over the next couple weeks, promise.
