Editor's Log 007
Dexter’s everywhere, Dubplate Drama turns 20, and Ceebo finally feeds the Blair Babies
Hi all,
Welcome back to the Editor’s Log, your weekly digest of what mattered, what didn’t, and what I obsessed over anyway. This week was pretty quiet on my end, and I’ve been thinking about changing things up a bit, and making the mag a bit more me… What do you think? (You can reply to these emails btw)
Monday
dexter in the newsagent got interviewed by The Fader, after opening up for both Jim Legxacy and Blood Orange within months of each other - crazy I know! I caught her when she opened for Jim on the first London night, and I saw her live at a newsagent (lol) a while back. The interview’s short, but definitely worth a read - they touch on everything from “YOLO” to Uncle CCTV (iykyk).
I finally listened to that Lausse the Cat album. So mid. I really don’t get the hype, after more than five years I expected something tighter, sharper… better.
Tuesday
Chy Cartier (fellow North London babe) wore Lueder in Re-Edition’s Autumn/Winter issue. I love Chy, I love Lueder - spiritual alignment. I might have to buy the mag just for that spread.
Dubplate Drama hit 20 years since episode one. One of my all-time favourite shows. I watched it during GCSE season to distract myself (and everyone else) from revising. Certified classic, and half the people involved became legends in their own right: Luke Hyams, Shystie, Skepta, Isaac Densu… If you haven’t watched it, correct that. They’re even doing a 20th anniversary screening at Rich Mix next year!
Wednesday
Maelhaus announced the closure of their Worcester store, a proper institution 💔. I never went down, but I’ve known Cian since I was about 14, and when it comes to fashion he’s one of the most knowledgeable people I know. Don’t stress though, he’s been hinting at bigger things!
Ceebo dropped one of the hardest freestyles I’ve seen in a while for Bape, ahead of his mixtape. The man said “Tories made me this / Benefit cuts made shady kids.” A bar after my own heart. Definitely check it out.
Thursday (Blair Babies Day!)
Ceebo finally dropped ‘Blair Babies’ after much teasing. Mimi the Music Blogger executive produced it - perfect pairing. The mixtape is class, definitely one of my faves so far this year. I’m technically a Gordon Brown baby, but the mixtape feels like Gen Z cannon. Should be interviewing him soon, so send me any questions you want answered.
i-D interviewed Lila Moss. No shade but her answers were about as boring as they could be. “In the morning we open stockings and have a big breakfast” kind of set the tone.
The trailer dropped for The Devil Wears Prada 2. It doesn’t look great, but we’ll see. (And no, I’m not touching the Valentino discourse.)
Friday
Another trailer: Wuthering Heights. I’ve never read the book, but I am a Charli XCX fan, so I’m locked in by default. The trailer doesn’t give much away, so it could really be brilliant or terrible. Either way, I’m here for the ride.
Saturday
Deviation hit its 18th birthday. Judah and Benji B celebrated with an exhibition on Caledonian road and a photobook. I’ve never been, but as soon as I’m 18, I’m there.
I finally listened to Tara Lily’s new EP. It’s really really really good. Definitely a contender for project of the year. If you only listen to one thing, make it ‘Corcovado.’
Sunday
Checked out Proc Fiskal’s ‘Canticle Hardposte’ EP. Also amazing. If you’ve got anything I should hear before I lock in my end-of-year list, send it my way!
Until next week,
Sik
P.S. I’m open for work across writing, editorials, cultural research, production - basically anything interesting. Message me on Instagram or email me if you want to work together.
