Editor's Log 008
Letterboxd reinvented cinema, Bake Off reinvented Peep Show, and I reinvented myself (apparently)
Hi all,
Welcome back to the Editor’s Log, your weekly digest of what mattered, what didn’t, and what I got weirdly invested in anyway. This week was a little bit all over the place, and I even posted on Instagram again. This might be the start of my active era. Anyway, let’s get into it
Monday
I finally visited Manor Place, and I really like it. The residency setup is great, and it’s impressive how they’ve managed to turn the skatepark and football cage into a space where teenagers genuinely hang out. Manifesting my acceptance onto the residency next year, they just need a pool table and it’d be perfect.
Tuesday
The UK is set to outlaw reselling tickets for profit. God bless. I can’t count how many times I’ve missed a show because someone with faster fingers and deeper pockets swept the tickets. This feels like a huge win for actual fans.
Wednesday
Letterboxd is launching a Letterboxd Video Store to rival MUBI, Amazon, BFI Player… I think this is really smart and I can’t wait to see their curation! Also, if you’re on Letterboxd, add me @020sik
Danny L Harle announced his debut album, ‘Cerulean!’ I’ve loved everything he’s teased so far, and I still remember the first time I heard ‘Boing Beat’ like it was a religious moment.
I swung by the Carhartt Clipse launch in Soho. Cool, but I did think there’d be a performance. Afterwards I picked up the Chy Cartier Re-Edition cover I mentioned last week, then headed to the Sadie Coles openings - a reliably pretentious and intimidating crowd. Should’ve remembered to bring a friend as a human and emotional shield.
Thursday
The Great British Bake Off announced ‘The Great Peep Show Christmas Bake Off,’ which is basically targeted advertising for me. Peep Show is one of my favourite shows ever.
Crack Magazine is giving students free subscriptions until 24 December - run, don’t walk.
Ellen Poppy Hill, my favourite designer ever (I know, I know), announced an open studio. I will be there, flowers and chocolates in hand. I’ve always struggled to write about her work because I don’t know how to express the emotional impact it has on me, but I’m working on it.
Friday
Liz Johnson Artur was interviewed by Dazed, ahead of her upcoming book, ‘PDA.’ It’s a great interview, even if they did misspell her name in the headline. (Embarrassing, I know). PDA was a super important night and was home to so many amazing people: Jawara Alleyne, Saul Nash, Carrie Stacks, and countless others. Definitely looking forward to getting my hands on a copy.
On and Corbin Shaw dropped a very fun GTA-inspired ad for the new Ikon collection. I’m not the biggest On stan, but Corbin’s work is always interesting to see in context.
No Ghost, Dialled In, and Bradford 2025, have put together a “mixed-reality experience exploring how British South Asian communities in the 1970s and ’80s found joy in defiance, in community and in music.” Not sure I can make the trip all the way down to Bradford, but if you have a chance, it looks sick!
I went back to Manor Place to help my friend Amy with her Badgevent project (out Monday!), and somehow ended up helping Alistair build a concert set - side quests on side quests.
And yes, I finally posted on Instagram. It’s honestly one of the best posts to ever hit the gram. If you haven’t seen it…
Saturday
Linked Yaku at his studio - always working on something interesting, including a “Sik” hat. Not sure the name will survive, but naturally, I’m thrilled.
Then I headed to The Ouze’s open studio. Love the work, but some of those prices are unhinged. That being said, if I did have £11,000 lying around for a chess set, I’d hand it over immediately.
Then I went to the Climax Books opening. I was hoping to speak to Isabella Burley but she was deep in conversation the whole time I was there. I’d love to work on something with her, I think I could learn a lot.
Sunday
Finally dipped into some magazines I’ve been neglecting. Turns out I’m a huge fan of The Toe Rag and would love to write for them. They published a stunning poem by Ebun Sodipo, I can’t find it online, but you should definitely explore her work.
Until next week,
Sik
P.S. If anyone can get me a Kano interview (for any magazine), I’d owe you my life.
