Editor's Log 009
Margaret Howell makes the cut, Pam Hogg’s legacy lives on, and Jawnino’s unreleased tracks still rule my weekend
Hi all,
Welcome back to the Editor’s Log - your weekly digest of what mattered, what didn’t, and what I got weirdly invested in anyway. A lot happened this week, and I’m almost definitely forgetting something, but let’s get into it.
Monday
Highsnobiety dropped the Good Clothes Index. A few favourites made the cut - Conkers, Margaret Howell, Nicholas Daley… but the list leaned a bit too Japan-core for my liking. They also ran a great Margaret Howell interview back in April that’s well worth reading.
Amel Mukhtar interviewed Dave for The Face in his first interview post-album. It’s really interesting and well-written and brings so many of the album’s themes to life. Though why he’s assembling a stand-up routine… unclear.
BeauBeau’s beloved music club closed. Even I went sometimes, and I don’t make music. Dripset made every session feel special. Heartbroken.
Tuesday
Corey Fogelmanis spoke to Dazed about his role in Tommy Dorfman’s ‘I Wish You All The Best.’ Interesting interview, and I’ll definitely watch the film, but I’m still praying for a non-binary coming-of-age story about someone who isn’t white. Small wins for now.
Boy Harsher are directing a new film, The Lonely Woman, starring FKA Twigs, VTSS, Chloë Sevigny… the list is mad. They haven’t released an album in six years, but the last one was excellent, very curious to see how their world translates to film.
In the evening, I went to the On Road Music Journalism Workshop run by Meena Sears and Jesse Bernard. Meena’s Rinse show is great, and Jesse’s Substack is one of the best around. Highly recommend all of it.
After that, I headed to the Amie Blu concert and saw the set I (sort of) helped build come alive. Amie’s an incredible performer, and her latest project is elite. If you look hard enough, you can catch me looking confused in a BTS video. Yes, I know I can’t drill a hole. Please don’t mention it.
Wednesday
Pam Hogg passed away, a huge loss. One of the few designers who was unapologetically herself for her entire career. She brought Scottish counterculture into direct conversation with the Blitz Kids and other underground movements. An icon across fashion and the wider arts.
Dave and Kano dropped the Chapter 16 video. The attention to detail is wild - one take, shot on film, in the Shard. Easily one of the best songs and videos of the year. And hopefully a sign that Kano is cooking…
Thursday
The founders of Perfect Lives were interviewed by The Face. I loved the old shop but still haven’t visited the new one, adding it to the list.
Some of my favourite young imagemakers - Jordy Nasa, Stella Nunes, Lorane Hochstaetter… were named three of “The Central Saint Martins Students Shaping the Future of Fashion Image” by Another. Fully deserved, and I’m certain all three are on the brink of huge things.
Yaz XL finally announced the whiptail bag, manufactured by Eden Tan. Not exactly my swag, but certain people will make it look insane. Very happy for her.
Friday
Not much news, but in the evening, I went to the Jawnino x Surf Gang listening party. As you all know, Jawnino is my favourite musician, and “Alise” is easily one of my tracks of the year. The night had a bit of a strange vibe, but I met Corbin Shaw, who was really lovely, which made my night, if all the unreleased music (and free tee) hadn’t already.
Saturday
Derek Ridgers spoke to It’s Nice That about his new book: a series of photographs of people kissing, mostly around London. A nice reminder that love does still exist. I will be buying it.
Benny Andallo teased a new hat, a very The Raven meets 1950s British ghost film vibe. Again, not my swag, but I love it.
Sunday
Rei Kawakubo was interviewed by Vogue Australia. A rare and really strong interview that somehow doesn’t compromise her mystique at all. I wish I could see the Kawakubo/Westwood exhibition in person.
Chanel released a new video starring Margaret Qualley and A$AP Rocky, their latest brand ambassador. Great direction, great soundtrack, no notes.
Maxime Black, one of London’s most exciting designers, dressed the Chelsea team ahead of their draw with my team, Arsenal. Big Maxime fan, so this was great to see (sports results aside).
Until next week,
Sik
P.S. I’m considering getting a manager and/or agency representation, reach out if interested.
