Editor's Log 014
Late starts, editorial exits, and the first fractures of 2026.
Hi all,
Welcome back to the Editor’s Log. It’s a terrible way to start the year by sending the first one late, but a lot has been going on in my life, and my laptop battery broke. Back to a proper schedule next week!
Let’s get into it.
Monday
Marginalised-communities-led East London bookshop The Common Press is looking for collaborators! Sign up here.
We finally found out what Björk thinks about Donald Trump threatening to invade Greenland. The forced contraception controversy is horrifying. I largely agree with her, though I do question whether now is the most strategic moment to push for Greenlandic independence.
I started SikTok again! I’m slightly embarrassed, but let me know what you think.
Tuesday
Khyati Trehan launched a new website, ‘Around the World in Good News.’ Pick a date and you’ll get a piece of positive news from somewhere in the world on that day. A genuinely nice idea for the relentlessly bleak moment we’re living in.
The Martin Parr Foundation is opening a new retrospective, ‘The Last Resort,’ next month. I really hope I can make it down to Bristol to catch this one.
Matthew Whitehouse has left The Face. This one really hit me. He took over as editor in late 2020, around the time I started reading the magazine (yes, I was a very tapped-in 12-year-old), and turned it into - in my view, unequivocally - the coolest magazine in the world. When The Face first published me, I was ecstatic. When I was featured in print, it felt surreal: the magazine I grew up reading was championing my work.
I spoke to someone recently who described The Face today as the 2020s answer to what The Fader was a decade ago, and that feels spot on. Matthew’s editorial vision was endlessly curious, deeply plugged-in, and he was truly invested in making space for the next generation. I never met him, but he was unfailingly kind to me and clearly cared about nurturing new voices. They’ve hired some excellent editors in the meantime - Ashantéa Austin, Aaron Esh, Biz Sherbert among them - but it’s hard to imagine anyone matching what Matthew built.
Wednesday
Jonathan Anderson released his first trainer for Dior. I personally think it’s quite ugly, but it’s coherent with his menswear universe, and I can see the right people pulling it off.
New covers for W Magazine. I actually really like them, despite the backlash. The Sydney Sweeney (boooooo) and A$AP Rocky covers in particular are great. Sarah Moonves’ styling eats, as always.
The RA Summer Exhibition is now open for submissions. Artists, get submitting!
The Guardian published six of their most striking images shot by women in 2025. I really loved the Isabella Madrid and Tshepiso Moropa photographs. The Stacey Gillian Abe image didn’t quite land for me, though.
Thursday
Phoebe Boswell, one of my favourite artists, is set to produce work for the Tube, specifically at Notting Hill and Bethnal Green stations. Very excited for this! I’m also extremely intrigued by Ellen Gallagher’s upcoming Tube map, filtered through colonial histories and marine mythology.
The RA’s Young Artist Summer Show is open for submissions. Again, if you’re eligible, this is a huge opportunity!
Ministry of Sound is set for renovation. I’ve actually never been (eek), but I’m hoping it’s good enough to finally justify a visit.
The AlphaTheta CDJ-3000X now has Apple Music integration. This is TERRIBLE. DJs purchasing music is one of the few remaining reliable income streams for electronic artists, streaming sets undercuts that entirely.
The Face (still reeling) published a piece on Martin Parr, written by his friends. Heartbreaking, especially Elaine Constantine’s and Nadia Lee Cohen’s contributions, but beautiful to see how deeply loved he was.
Friday
I’m still desperate to see the Helmut Lang exhibition in Vienna. I’ve never been the biggest Lang fan, but the influence is undeniable. If anyone goes, tell me what I’m missing!
The first Issey Miyake x ASICS collab is here! I like it, but it doesn’t quite feel Issey enough. Still strong, though.
Another Dave music video, this time for Raindance featuring Tems. Just announce the marriage already bro.
Friend and PR extraordinaire Jordyn Lasko was featured in Line of Best Fit’s Desk Notes. She’s genuinely one of the coolest people I know, and almost certainly the coolest Canadian.
Paul Mescal for GQ. Wow. Fuck. I love this shoot. And when Adam Baidawi’s writing, you already know the profile’s going to bang.
I also watched the new Avatar in 3D at the BFI IMAX. As an experience: incredible. From a critical perspective: even if he’s deeply unlikeable, Jake Sully is still very much a white saviour.
Saturday
Bakerl0.0? I think this campaign is dumb and ugly. Alcohol advertising - yes, even non-alcoholic - should be banned in public spaces, full stop.
Biz Sherbert wrote for The Face (three mentions this week, possibly a record) about Izzy and Kylan Darnell. It documents a mode of femininity and a way of life so foreign to me that it’s really fascinating. Biz also has a great Substack, so worth subscribing.
20 years since Dubstep Warz! One of my favourite mixes ever. Mandatory listening.
Sunday
The Golden Globes. Hannah Einbinder drained all life out of a Valentino couture look. Mark Ronson looked great in Saint Laurent SS26. Jenna Ortega looked the best, for me, in Dilara, though I strongly disapprove of Dilara for obvious reasons.
Until next week,
Sik
P.S. Hope everyone’s having a good start to the year. If you see something you think I’d be into, or just want to chat, give me a shout!
