Editor's Log 015
Political nausea, cultural anniversaries, and a very good weekend.
Hi all,
Welcome back to the Editor’s Log. Pretty much back to usual this week, and I had a very fun weekend too!
Monday
The Face interviewed Jack Anderton, Nigel Farage’s so-called “Gen Z whisperer.” He makes me physically sick. A genuinely pathetic figure. That said, I respect The Face for publishing it - understanding the opposition matters, unfortunately.
Tuesday
Labi Siffre will be back in the BBC Piano Room next month. I’m a massive fan, so this is very exciting news.
Nine years since we lost Mark Fisher. A huge loss to culture and critical thought. He would have had so much to say about the world today, though we’re lucky to still have such a rich body of work from him.
I treated myself to a New Yorker subscription. I love it. Writing for them one day remains a quiet dream.
Wednesday
Poundshoppe made what I believe is his music-writing debut for Dazed, on the rise of Christianity in UK rap. A really interesting piece, excited to see what he tackles next.
Bandcamp has banned all AI music. Yesss! Voluntarily listening to AI music is bad enough; paying for it is unhinged.
A Nan Goldin retrospective opened at Gagosian. She took one of my favourite photographs of all time, so I will absolutely be going.
Thursday
An exhibition at the Bomb Factory was forced to close following right-wing, hate-fuelled vandalism. I hope this is a one-off. I don’t want to imagine a London where this becomes normalised.
If you’re a Wes Anderson fan and happen to have £2k spare, you should absolutely buy this pen set. It’s beautiful. I want it desperately.
A new club, The Timber Loft, is set to open in East London. “New club” plus “East London” can go one of two ways. Let’s see.
The Green Party is fundraising at Heaven. I really dislike the direction British politics is heading in, we’re borrowing far too much from the US playbook.
Nori, one of my favourite new-gen MCs, dropped a sick freestyle for BTB Max.
JayaHadADream is MOBO-nominated! I have A LOT of thoughts on the MOBO nominees. SikTok soon, maybe.
Friday
Dazed interviewed Olivia Dean. I enjoy reading what she has to say, but does every interview need to be an advert? Also: someone please get her on a runway. I’m thinking Ellen Poppy Hill or 16Arlington.
Nan Goldin donated work to Ms Rachel’s fundraiser, good to know she’s firmly on the right side of history.
In a very strange turn of events, Aphex Twin has overtaken Taylor Swift in monthly YouTube listeners. Who would’ve thought? My favourite Aphex track right now is Vordhosbn, highly recommend.
I interviewed Ethan Joseph. He’s extremely sharp, and we had a great conversation, honestly one of my favourite interviews I’ve done.
Afterwards, I went to Cap1talA’s show at Brixton Jamm. He wasn’t a great performer, unfortunately. Saiming was easily the highlight of the night.
Also, as a writer, I desperately need this Bic lamp.
Saturday
The Dior-o-lingo campaign dropped. I love it. Loewe spelling bee vibes all over again.
In the evening, I went to my friend David’s Motion party. Always a good time. He’s a seriously good DJ and truly cares about the craft, definitely check him out.
Sunday
Vogue predicted this year’s women’s footwear trends. Honestly? I’m here for all of them.
Opal magazine is hosting a launch in Paris on Wednesday, a must-go if you’re around.
I went to a Converse screening of the AFCON final. The most roller-coaster night of my life. What the fuck. When Senegal started boycotting the match I was beyond confused. Absolutely insane.
Until next week,
P.S. If you didn’t watch the AFCON final, you really, really missed out!
