Editor's Log 019
Grime anniversaries, great covers, and one unforgettable concert.
Hi all,
Welcome back to the Editor’s Log! It was a very quiet week on my end, but there was still a decent amount happening in the wider world.
Monday
A new book on Sheffield’s independent music scene is on the way. I’ve been telling people for years that Sheffield’s scene is underrated, even my friends from Sheffield sometimes don’t realise how deep it goes. Very excited to get my hands on this one.
Tuesday
Christine Tyler Hill and her snail-mail newsletter were featured in the Wall Street Journal. I’d love to do a physical version of this newsletter one day, probably as a one-off rather than a regular thing. I also wouldn’t mind making a small fraction of the £14k she’s reportedly pulling in every month…
The International Assembly Conference lineup is here!! Anytime I see Mindy Seu involved in something, I’m immediately interested; her CV is something to aspire to. It looks like a really strong programme overall, and I’m curious to hear what Brodie Kaman has to say too.
Crack Magazine also shared their favourite newsletters this week. Sadly this one didn’t make the list, but two of my favourites - Jesse Bernard’s Marginal Eras and Emma Garland’s Gabrielle - were included, which is very deserved.
Anyone with good taste also celebrated 20 years of Kidulthood, one of my favourite films ever. It’s so rooted in its moment that it’s become completely timeless.
Wednesday
EsDeeKid is on the cover of i-D. I’m not always convinced by the direction the magazine has taken recently, but I do like this cover. Interestingly, they didn’t actually interview him; it’s more of a deep dive by Kieran Press-Reynolds, which might actually work better. The shoot is also one of my favourites of the year so far, photographed by Aidan Zamiri.
Ghetts has been sentenced to 12 years, with a minimum of eight. I’m a big fan of his music, but it’s difficult to feel that this isn’t deserved. Still a sad situation all round.
Kano’s Made In The Manor also turned ten this week. One of my favourite albums from one of my favourite artists. I’ve been slowly working on an anniversary piece about it, which should hopefully be out soon!
Jawnino is on the cover of Crack! If you know me, you know he’s probably my favourite artist. The interview somehow manages to make him feel even more elusive while still revealing quite a lot about him. Robert Kazandjian did a great job with it, though of course I’d have loved that call myself (lol). Also need to check out that food spot they mentioned.
Thursday
The LVMH Prize semi-finalists have been announced. I’m really into Kartik Research, Nong Rak, and Petra Fagerström (no surprises there), but if I had to pick one I’d probably give it to Kartik. They’ve been doing consistently strong work for years now. This year also feels like another Central Saint Martins sweep, which is becoming a tradition at this point.
Friday
Highsnobiety published a piece on some of their favourite Indian menswear brands, including Kartik Research. I clearly need to spend more time exploring that whole space.
R3 Soundsystem announced a rave in Trafalgar Square protesting far-right politics. The lineup includes Shygirl, Benji B, Ben UFO, Katy B and others. It’s encouraging to see so many artists come together around something like this, I’ll definitely be there.
In the evening I went to see Dave at the O2. Honestly, wow. You know a concert is special when a) you barely take any good photos or videos, and b) you keep thinking he might bring guests out but you don’t even mind that he doesn’t. It might actually be the best concert I’ve ever been to. I had an amazing time and I’m already excited to go again on Wednesday. Hopefully he does bring out Kano… Read my review of the show for Mixtape Madness here!
Saturday
Speaking of Dave, apparently he’s the first musician to have official custom Stone Island looks made specifically for a tour. It makes sense, he’s been repping the brand from the very beginning. And the pieces themselves are sick. If only they didn’t cost an actual arm and a leg.
Sunday
I really liked Ashley Williams’ AW26 collection. It’s a shame she skipped London this season. The characters in the collection feel cohesive when seen together, but the pieces would also work well individually. It’s a nice balance between something expressive and something people might actually wear.
And of course, happy International Women’s Day everyone!
Until next week,
Sik
P.S. Next week should be a bit more eventful; a couple of concerts and a few other things lined up.
